Singer-songwriter Wejdene Chaib (April 23, 2004), better known mononymously as Wejdene, catapulted to stardom in her home country of France over the course of a prolific 2020. Known for her R&B-inflected brand of pop which has also drawn on tangible sonic influences from afrobeats, the Saint-Denis-born musician quickly caught the attention of Caroline International subsidiary Guette Music, inking a deal with them prior to sharing any music with the wider world. In the twelve months following the release of her December 2019 debut “J’Attends”, the young singer amassed several million followers on social media, with her candid videos and light-hearted dance routines further solidifying her burgeoning fanbase. Her third single, May 2020’s “Anissa,” saw her gain international recognition, with the platinum-certified song reaching Number 3 on the French Singles Chart and its video garnering more than 74 million views. A fourth single, the gold-selling “Coco,” arrived in August, matching the charting achievement of its predecessor. Promptly capitalising on this newfound fame, Wejdene dropped her debut album, 16, in September 2020, its title a nod to her age at the time of its release. The LP peaked at Number 3 on the French charts and Number 7 on Belgium’s Wallonia charts, with all but one of its twelve tracks also entering the French Top 100. 2020 also saw her release two collaborations: “Trahison” with rapper and label-mate Larsé, and “Loin de Tout” with fellow pop star Jul, which appeared on his album Loin du Monde. Preceded by the Top 5 single “Je T’Aime de Ouf,” her sophomore effort 16 ou Pas saw the light in 2021 and featured guests spots by Jul (“Singe d’Or”) and Hatik (“Dans Ma Bulle”).
