Catherine Major

Catherine Major is a Juno-nominated vocalist from Outremont, Quebec, where she was born on February 18, 1980. At four years old, she began studying piano in Canada, laying the foundation for the mix of pop music and French chanson that she would later explore with her solo albums. Par-dessus bord, her debut record, was released in 2004, and Catherine Major supported the record with a tour alongside Canadian folksinger Richard Desjardins. Inspired by Desjardins, who scored numerous documentaries and other films in addition to recording his own albums, Major wrote original music for Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette's 2007 film The Ring. Her score won a Jutra Award for "Best Original Music" one year later, the same year that Major's second album, Rose Sang, appeared. Le désert des solitudes, her third album, followed in 2011 and became her breakthrough release, receiving a Juno Award nomination for "Francophone Album of the Year" at the Juno Awards in 2012. That next year, Major received a nomination for "Best Original Music" at the Jutra Awards, this time for her musical contributions to Micheline Lanctôt's Pour l'amour de Dieu. Catherine Major's fifth solo album, Carte Mère, was released in 2020, featuring contributions from the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra. Meanwhile, Major's earlier albums continued to sell well, with Rose Sang earning a gold certification in early 2023.
