New York-based Frenchman Olivier Conan forms Chicha Libre to quench his love of Peruvian chicha. Chicha is a local form of Colombian cumbia that emerged in the 1960s, replacing the traditional accordion with the guitar. Having become a major genre in Peru, chicha has endured to this day, evolving with the times to become technocumbia after the injection of electro elements. In 2008, Chicha Libre released Sonido Amazonico on Olivier Conan's Barbès Records label. Comprising a Frenchman, two Americans, a Venezuelan and a Mexican, Chicha Libre returned in May 2012 with a tasty Canibalismo.
