Singer Maria Brink and guitarist Chris Howorth formed the American alt-metal band In This Moment in 2005 in Los Angeles, California. In This Moment's first album, Beautiful Tragedy, received mixed reviews upon its release in 2007, although Brink's stage presence and flamboyant behaviour helped win a loyal fan base of metalcore fans. By the time the band released its second album, The Dream, in 2008, the musicians had evolved their sound to include more pop melodies and hard rock textures. The Dream reached number 12 on Billboard's Hard Rock Albums chart, with the follow-up album A Star-Crossed Wasteland reaching number 4 two years later. Blood arrived in 2012 and became the group's first Number 1 success on the Hard Rock Albums chart, thanks to singles like the gold-certified "Adrenalize" and the platinum-selling "Whore." 2014's Black Widow, 2017's Ritual, and 2020's Mother were all Top 5 successes, and the band even scored another Number 1 hit with the single "Sick Like Me," which topped the Hot Singles Sales chart in 2014. After a long history with Atlantic Records, In This Moment partnered with BMG for the album Godmode, which was released in 2023 and featured a cover of Bjork's "Army of Me."
