JO1

Assembled through the reality competition show Produce 101, JO1 is a Japanese boy idol group formed in 2020. Composed of finalists Issei Mamehara, Ren Kawashiri, Takumi Kawanishi, Shosei Ohira, Shion Tsurubo, Ruki Shiroiwa, Keigo Sato, Syoya Kimata, Junki Kono, Sukai Kinjo, and Sho Yonashiro, JO1 quickly made their debut in March of 2020 with the single “Protostar,” reaching the top of both the Oricon charts and the Weekly Singles Chart after selling over 30,000 copies. The track also obtained platinum certification from the RIAJ. Follow-up singles “Infinity” and “Oh-Eh-Oh” shot straight to the top of the Billboard Japan Hot 100, and “Stargazer” made JO1 the only artist to have two consecutive number 1 singles on the weekly charts. Their studio debut The Star arrived in November 2020, and landed at number 2 on both the Oricon charts and the Billboard Japan Hot 100, achieving gold status shortly after. JO1 culminated an entire year of work with their first appearance at the FNS Music Festival, where they presented the promotional single “Shine a Light” and held their first-ever live-streaming concert under the name Starlight, which was viewed by over 120,000 people around the world. Towards the end of the year, they won the Rising Star Award at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan and were named Best New Asian Artist by the Mnet Asian Music Awards. In 2021, JO1 partnered with Kit Kat Japan for the single “Tsutaerareru Nara” and played a second online concert prior to the release of their single “Challenger.” Over the following years, JO1 placed several of their songs in anime films and series, and issued their sophomore effort Kizuna in 2022, achieving pole position on both the Oricon and Billboard charts. They would repeat the feat almost a year later with their third studio album, 2023's Equinox.
