Jonita Gandhi is an Indian-born Canadian playback singer who made her debut in the 2013 film Chennai Express. Born in Delhi into a music-loving household, she moved to Canada with her family when she was just nine months old. Encouraged by her father, an electrical engineer and part-time musician, she received formal training in both Western and Hindustani classical singing. After a frustrated attempt to participate in the reality show Canadian Idol, she began uploading covers of famous Hindi-film songs to her own video-streaming channel. Soon enough, her videos went viral and gave her the chance to perform alongside Indian singer Sonu Nigam on his world tour, a deciding factor in launching her playback singing career. Following her debut in the movie Chennai Express (2013), Jonita Gandhi worked with legendary composer A.R. Rahman on the films Highway (2014), OK Bangaram (2015), and 24 (2016). She was also featured in Rahman's 2017 concert film One Heart. In 2020, she became a coach on the Indian kids singing reality show Taare Zameen. "Arabic Kuthu," her contribution to the soundtrack of the Tamil film Beast, appeared in 2022 and climbed to Number 17 on the Indian Top 100.
