Klaus Lage is a popular German singer who was born in Soltau in Lower Saxony in 1950. After moving to Berlin in the 1970s he became a teacher and then a social worker before joining the Berliner Rock Ensemble as a singer and guitarist. He was thirty years old when he released his self-titled debut album which was the start of a recording career spanning three decades. His distinctive 'leidermacher' style won him a large following during the 1980s especially after the release of his fourth album `Schweissperlen' in 1984. The album spawned three hit singles, most notably '1000 und 1 Nacht (Zoom!)' which became one of the biggest German pop hits of the 1980s. His popularity continued into the 1990s but failed to reach the heights of his previous success until he played the lead role in the musical 'Stars' which rekindled interest in his work. Latterly, Lage has moved away from his bluesy rock style and concentrated on more acoustic-based compositions, often reworking some of his earlier material.
