Led by frontman Jon Micah Sumrall and guitarist James Mead, Kutless is a Christian hard-rock band that formed in 1999, while the group's members were college students in Portland, Oregon. The band's self-titled debut was released in 2002. Beginning with 2004's Sea of Faces, Kutless' albums routinely cracked the Top 5 of Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart, with 2005's gold-selling Strong Tower marking the group's best-selling album to date. Kutless earned their first chart-topping Christian single, "What Faith Can Do," in 2009, and spent the following decade weathering a handful of lineup changes, none of which did much to dampen the success of releases like 2012's Believer, 2014's Glory, or 2015's Surrender. By 2020, the band had released more than 30 different Top 40 hits on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart.
