Matt Maher is a Grammy-nominated contemporary Christian musician, as well as a former winner of the Dove Awards' "Songwriter of the Year." He was born in Newfoundland, Canada, on November 10, 1974, and moved to Arizona during his college years. While in Phoenix, he earned a music degree from Arizona State University and paid for his own tuition with a recurring gig as a jazz pianist. After signing with the Christian-minded label Spirit and Song, he released 2001's The End and the Beginning, 2003's Welcome to Life, and 2006's Overflow, none of which charted in America. His career accelerated with 2008's Empty & Beautiful, his first album to be released by Essential Records. Empty & Beautiful reached Number 12 on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart, paving the way for five consecutive records that all cracked the Top 10. The first of these, Alive Again, arrived in 2009 and peaked at Number 6 on Top Christian Albums, with the title track receiving a Dove Awards nomination for "Worship Song of the Year" and the album itself receiving a nomination for "Praise & Worship Album of the Year." That same year, Maher won the Dove Award for "Special Events Album of the Year" with Glory Revealed II: The Word of God in Worship, a collaborative project that also featured contributions from fellow CCM artist Kari Jobe. 2011's The Love in Between was similarly successful, while 2013's All the People Said Amen produced the platinum-certified single "Lord, I Need You" as well as the gold-certified title track. "Because He Lives (Amen)," the Grammy-nominated lead single from 2015's Saints and Sinners, topped both the Christian Airplay and Christian AC Songs charts, as did the title track from 2020's Alive & Breathing. Maher released The Stories I Tell Myself two years later, earning another Top 40 hit with his Lizzie Morgan duet "Learning."
