Mayday

One of the most commercially- and critically-acclaimed rock bands of the Chinese-speaking world, Mayday formed in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1997. Vocalist Ashin (Chen Shin-Hung), bassist Masa (Tsai Shen-Yen), drummer Guan You (Liu Yeh-Ming), and guitarists Monster (Eugene Wen Shang-Yi) and Stone (Shi Chin-Hang) released the band's debut, Mayday's First Album, in 1999, with Ashin writing the album's songs in a combination of Mandarin and Hokkien languages. The sophomore album Viva Love arrived one year later, earning the group the inaugural honor of "Best Band" at the Golden Melody Awards and setting the stage for the unprecedented commercial success of 2001's People Life Ocean Wild, which sold more than 350,000 copies within two weeks of its release. After a short release, Mayday returned with 2003's Time Machine and took home the Golden Melody Award for "Best Band" once again. Already one of the country's biggest concert attractions, Mayday continued to successfully tour and release new music for a decade, releasing career highlights like 2006's Born to Love, 2008's Poetry of the Day After, and 2011's The Second Round during that time. They also played shows across the world, becoming the first Chinese-speaking band to headline Madison Square Garden in New York City. Another multi-platinum record, History of Tomorrow, was released in 2016. Four years later, when the Covid-19 pandemic halted Mayday's usual touring plans, the bandmates recorded their performance at an empty Taipei Municipal Stadium and released it as a live album entitled Live in the Sky.
