Münchener Freiheit are a German rock group with a catalogue stretching back three decades. The band got their start in Munich in 1981 and by the following year had released their new wave-tinged debut, 'Umsteiger'. Their synthpop-leaning follow-up, 'Licht', followed in '83 and in '84 they released the more commercially-oriented new wave album 'Herzschlag einer Stadt'. Their breakout hit came in 1986 in the form of 'Von Anfang An' powered by the singles 'Ohne Dich (Schlaf Ich Heut Nacht Nicht Ein)' and 'Tausendmal Du'. From there they took aim at the international market, releasing versions of their songs in English and seeing some success in Greece, Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands. They had one hit in the UK with 'Keeping the Dream Alive', the English version of 'So Lang' Man Träume Noch Leben Kann', reaching number 14 in the charts, though the success was never repeated. Since the '80s the band has kept up a steady stream of albums, six of which have been certified gold. In 2012 Stefan Zauner left the band to pursue a solo career and was replaced as lead vocalist by Tim Wilhelm.
