One of the most prolific and influential acts to ever emerge from the French hip-hop scene, rapper Thomas Gérard Idir (June 26, 1980), better known by his stage name Sinik, was born in Paris' 4th arrondissement to Algerian immigrants. At the age of 4, he moved to Ulis with his family and spent a big part of his childhood dreaming of becoming a professional football player. During his teenage years, he found solace in hip-hop after being arrested several times for selling drugs, drawing inspiration from French rap pioneers NTM, IAM, and Ideal J. In 1996, he founded the collective L'Amalgame, with whom he released a series of well-received mixtapes before launching his solo career in the early aughts with the EPs Malsain (2000) and Artiste Triste... (2002). Preceded by the street album En attendant l'album (2004), his highly-anticipated studio debut La Main sur le cœur arrived in 2005 via Warner Music. The album climbed to Number 3 on the French charts and was followed by the equally successful Sang froid (2006) and Le Toit du monde (2007). Following the underwhelming commercial performance of his fourth full-length Ballon d'or (2009), he returned in 2011 with the back-to-basics street album Le Côté malsain, which climbed to Number 8 in France and received rave reviews by critics. This success carried over into his next releases, including titles like La Plume et le Poignard (2012), Immortel II (2015), Drône (2017), Invincible (2019), and 8ème Art (2020). Niksi, his tenth studio effort, hit retail in 2022 and reached Number 28 on the SNEP Albums Chart.
