Born Gianna Perez on 4 February 2000 in New Jersey, US, and primarily raised in Florida, the LBGTQAI+ indie-folk singer-songwriter known professionally as Gigi Perez, or simply gigi, first gained online notoriety in 2021 with her self-released debut single, the acoustic gem "Sometimes (Backwood)." The success of the track led to a deal with Mogul Vision/Interscope Records, and she released a cache of music with the label in 2022, including singles "The Man" and "When She Smiles," which were both contained on her debut 2023 EP, How to Catch a Falling Knife. She scored her big break the following year with "Sailor Song," which charted all over the world and cracked the US Billboard Hot 100.
